About the brand
From waste to value
Goat and sheep skins are abundant in Switzerland, but are rarely used. Marai processes them locally and with vegetable tanning agents to create beautiful leather and wool skins and use them to design durable objects.
The idea for MARAI was born when they heard that tens of thousands of goat and sheep skins from the food industry are incinerated in Switzerland every year, since the end of the regional leather industry in the 1950s. Fortunately, some of the hides still find their way to G. Neuenschwander Söhne AG in Oberdiessbach, a hide merchant and tanner with a 150-year tradition. However, due to a lack of demand, the fur trade has been in a deep slumber for several decades: the fur warehouse is bursting at the seams. If there are no buyers for the furs in the foreseeable future, they will have to be incinerated.
Marai wants to counteract this wasteful development. In a world where resources are getting scarcer and scarcer, it is exactly these natural and recyclable materials that need to be used. In small factories they are sewn into timelessly designed, high quality products that will faithfully accompany you in your everyday life for many years to come.
